Samdhana-Karana: “A Healing Act”

Samdhana-Karana is Sanskrit, the language of ancient India, for “a healing act.” Our name is indicative of our approach to yoga as a method of healing ourselves and our community.

What is Yoga? Yoga is a method of physical, mental, and spiritual integration that originated in ancient India. Yoga has many layers and any one of them can act as entry points to the practice. Asanas are the physical postures that strengthen, open, and release tension from the body. Vinyasa or flow yoga is movement linked by breath. Other elements of yoga include meditation, conscious breathing, selfless service, mantra (sacred sound) and chanting, and the study of texts and philosophy. At SKY, we are interested in all aspects of yoga, believing that each person will come into the practice that serves her or him best.

If you struggle with any of the following, a regular yoga practice may help you discover more health, peace, and ease of movement in your breath, body, thoughts and ability to deal gracefully with whatever you are facing:

Physical pain, such as from an injury, arthritis, or aging
Muscle tension that causes headaches, migraines, and insomnia
Diseases, such as Multiple Sclerosis or cancer
Anxiety, stress, overactive thoughts
Major transitions or highly emotional life experiences
Depression
PTSD

You will have a chance to let us know what limitations or life situation, if any, you are dealing with, so that we can best assist you in your yoga practice. Yoga is not intended as a replacement for medical attention or therapy.
